Arco lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos : functional elegance sums up this fantastic floor lamp designed by Achille Castiglioni for Flos in 1962. The Arco lamp is a superbly executed work of art which duals as a stylish modern floor lamp; it features our favorite material by far; Italian Carrara marble. Carrara is a town in the Italian Alps where the quarries are located which produce this fantastic marble. The marble (Michelangelo's favorite) from this area has been used in Italy since Roman times. Every time we see a Flos lamp in person, its quality and design features leave us astounded - a big word, but the only right word - to describe these fantastic modern lamps.
The Arco lamp was designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglionii for Flos in 1962. The Arco lamp is a floor lamp which provides direct light and satisfies the request of direct illumination without the need to fix it to the ceiling. Most rooms have the electrical output for a ceiling lamp right in the middle of the ceiling, but most dining tables are not placed in the middle of a room. Achille Castiglioni was unhappy because of the cable going from the output to the position where the pendant lamp is fixed to illuminate the table. For this reason he designed the Arco lamp, together with Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

Arco lamp production: All Arco lamps from Flos are produced in Italy by expert Italian craftsmen. The base of the Arco lamp is of the highest quality Carrara mable that can be found. Flos uses Carrara marble for the Arco lamps which is one of the finest materials. Flos currently offers the base of the Arco lamp in either white Carrara marble or black marble. The base features our favorite material; Italian Carrara marble. Carrara is a
town in the Italian Alps. The marble (Michelangelo's favorite since he used Carrara marble for several of his sculptures) from
this area has been used in Italy since Roman times. Every time we see a
Flos lamp in person, its quality and
design features leave us astounded - a big word, but the only right
word -
to describe these lamps. The base is the heaviest part of the Arco lamp and weighs about 143 lbs (65 kg).

Arco lamp production: the
metal reflector of the Arco lamp is made from two pieces. One fixed part made
in the shape of a perforated cap to ease the cooling of the lamp, and one mobile part made out of an aluminum
ring placed on the fixed part so that its position can be adjusted
depending on the height of the third section of the stem. The curved stem of the Arco lamp is made of three
pieces, all made out of stainless steel with a U profile that slide
inside each other, like a fishing rod, the telescopic movement also
conceals the electric leads. This gives more span to the arc, and
enables the Arco lamp to be set at three different heights. The height
of the Arco lamp is 8.2 feet (2,5 meters) and the width from the base
to the reflector is 6.56 feet (2 meters).

The Arco lamp has remained
unchanged and the current
production is exactly the same as the ones produced in 1962 with
exception of the electrical system which was upgraded. The Arco lamps timeless elegance makes it look as modern now as when it was first produced in 1962. Possibly, hundreds
of thousands of Arco floor lamps have been sold all over the world
since 1962.
This modern design cult object was a collaboration between Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and the lighting company Flos from Italy. Achille Castiglioni himself once said that he found inspiration for the Arco lamp by looking at regular street lights in Italy during the early 1960's: perhaps because the shaft of the Arco lamp looks like the shaft of a traditional Italian street light during that period. The Arco lamp continues to be one of the most popular floor lamps ever made. It was by far one of the most popular creations from Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.
This modern floor lamp can be found in the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York and received numerous awards.
